In 2014, after a decade of inquiry to the Pentagon, Maisel was granted rare permission to photograph Dugway Proving Ground, a classified military site in a remote region of Utah where biological and chemical weapons are developed and tested. In 2018 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for this project.
Radius Books, a 501(c)3 non-profit publishing company based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will be publishing the Proving Ground monograph. Radius Books publishes exquisite books of artistic and cultural value for a wide audience.
To support the Proving Ground publication, Maisel is partnering with Radius to offer a limited edition photograph of one of the series’ most iconic images. Air Force Target Grid Building 4 depicts a singular structure built for the sole purpose of being seen from above by Air Force pilots flying over Dugway Proving Ground at high speeds. The print is in an edition of 25 + 5AP, and is priced at $2,500. Supporters will be credited in the book, and will also receive a signed copy of the book upon its release.
