“David Maisel: Black Maps And Other Dilemmas” Public Lecture at the Bates College Museum of Art.

In his ongoing, multi-chaptered series Black Maps, David Maisel’s aerial photographs of environmentally impacted sites explore the aesthetics and politics of radically human-altered environments, open pit mines, clear-cut forests, and zones of water reclamation, framing the issues of contemporary landscape with equal measures of documentation and metaphor. Maisel’s surreal and disquieting images take the viewer toward the margins of the unknown, and posit an expanded definition of contemporary landscape.
