“The National Gallery of Art’s latest exhibition, “Beneath the Surface: Mining and American Photography,” lands at a particularly apt moment, its compelling images reminding us how dependent the country is on natural resources — and the high cost of extracting them. . . . Several images of environmental degradation are disturbingly beautiful, such as David Maisel’s aerial shot of an emerald-green toxic waste pond associated with gold mining on the Carlin Trend in Nevada.”
